Our October, 2008 event, "The Next Generation of Work Flexibility", took place at UC Irvine. The conference featured a panel of experts discussing flexibility in the workplace for professional mothers and employers looking to attract and retain highly skilled talent.  The panel featured perspectives from Deloitte, CultureRX & ROWE (Results Only Work Environment), an Organizational Behavior professor from UC Irvine's Merage School of Management and others.  The video below includes highlights from the panel discussion:

Next Generation of Work Flexibility Highlights:

Marissa Plume: Member of CultureRX Team and strong advocate of the Results Only Work Environment

Barbara Adachi: National Managing Principal, Initiative for the Retention & Advancement of Women, Deloitte LLP

Kim Shepherd: CEO of Decision Toolbox

Dr. Judy Rosener, Ph. D.:  Professor Emerita UC Irvine: The Merage School of Business

Catherine Clifford: Founder YourOnRamp

Moderators:

Sally Thornton: Co-Founder Flexperience

Theresa Walker: Editor for OCMoms.com and The Mom Blog, OC Register

The resounding theme from our panelists was that the following cultural changes need to be made so flexibility can thrive in today's workforce:

  • Transparency, especially by the executives within companies, when notifying people why you will not be available
  • Transfer control over schedules and location to the employee
  • Focus on results

Once transparent behavior is modeled by management, the stigma that tends to accompany flexibility in the workplace will disappear.  What will remain is a more results-focused, happier workforce that is empowered to find their own personal work/life balance.
